If that's your only VLserver or they're all offline...

you're not going to be able to see root.afs

Make the connection stop timing out; I assume that host is down or not 
reachable? If it's reachable you have a bug. If not, well, why not?

Consider using -dynroot; /afs will not be on the network and only things 
under it will be.
