I have received enough data to be able to determine that the vast
majority of organizations that deploy anti-virus software have
it configured to not scan AFS.
Of those who do scan AFS, the two most popular brands are McAfee
and Symantec. This should not be much of a surprise.
I have also been able to confirm that the bug that exists in
McAfee Version 7 does not exist in McAfee Version 8 Patch 11.
If you are using a version of McAfee earlier than Version 8 Patch 11
and certainly if you are using Version 7, you should seriously
consider upgrading. The McAfee Version 7 bug will result in data
corruption by intercepting a file write operation, queuing it to
be written after the file is scanned for viruses, and subsequently
failing to perform the write operation because the file was opened
for read-only and the file system (in this case AFS) refuses to
allow a write to be performed using a file handle configured without
write permission.
