There's generally no reason not to build modules dynamic these days, and
building openafs static is probably more trouble than it's worth.  And
keeps you from upgrading without rebooting, which is sometimes handy.

BTW, unless you really want to build your own kernel for your own
edification, the Debian kernel is very good.  I use the stock Debian
kernel on all my systems after building my own for years.
