You can use -dynroot and still achieve this by using a CellAlias file.
If you put "my.cell.name        my" in /etc/openafs/CellAlias (or
/usr/vice/etc/CellAlias if using transarc paths), -dynroot will provide
a symlink my->my.cell.name in /afs.
