[OpenAFS] Using Apple Spotlight on Leopard with OpenAFS

Greetings

I have a research group which would like to use Spotlight
in their OpenAFS space - they've told me that this only works
with AFP.  Is this true?  Have other sites been using
this and might be able to point me in the right direction?
Is there a way to do this globally rather than on every system?
