Perhaps you missed the part where Simon advocated making the new behavior 
the default?

We're still running it, on Solaris 9, and are in no hurry to change. 
Making this backend go away in 1.6, such that people are forced to change 
backends in order to upgrade their fileservers, seems too soon to me.

Making it the default behavior might be OK, provided we add code to make 
the fileserver recognize a vice partition containing existing inode volumes 
and refuse to start.
