One further point, I've just tried creating volumes on an old 1.2.11 file server and mounting that with no discernible difference in outcome. So, where the volume is created and where the volume is stored and which host type performs the mount (1.2.11 / 1.4.7) makes absolutely no difference in temporarily resolving the problem.
