Try stable version 1.4.8 from sid, not the experimental version.
Maybe you need a backport for old stable etch, lenny is stable now.

It is wise to use the OpenAFS klernal package (package openafs-client
from debian, version 1.4.8) and not to built the kafs (in kernel config).

For debian: YES. At least for us they work fine.
