For the record and those having this error in the future: bug 20727 was
most probably the cause. Patch or upgrade.

I tested 'backup dump' and 'vos dump' with packages from
debian-backports (1.4.11+dfsg-6~bpo50+1, containing the patch in rx.c).
That did the trick.

The patch (or upgrade from backports) only needed to be applied to the
host running the vos or backup command, in this case the tape coordinator).
