One of the things I've noticed is the OpenAFS RPMs don't set the 
appropriate SELinux attributes on /afs. This can be fixed by running 
'restorecon -v /afs' before starting the client.  I'm not certain this 
is your problem, but I've seen it before on Fedora hosts.
