We used distribution/version specific sysnames at CMU, with the default as
a fallback; so something like i386_rhel6, i386_rhel, i386_linux26 for the
sysname list on RHEL6.  (Practically, there might be one based on glibc
version in there too at a higher priority than the distribution one.)
