I believe the current status is that there are git trees against 1.6 and
master, and it needs to be broken down into reviewable patches and then
integrated into the main tree. As far as I'm aware, there are currently
insufficient resources dedicated to it for that to happen anytime soon
(either someone needs to dedicate a lot of time to doing that, or
someone needs to spend some money on it). It's seemed way too large for
e.g. me to work on in my spare time just because it's an interesting
project.
