Greetings,
We are beginning an effort to change the license terms under which OpenAFS can
be distributed to a dual license. Specifically, we we aim to change the license
terms so that you may distribute OpenAFS under either the IBM Public License
version 1.0 (IPL) or the GNU General Public License version 2.0 (GPLv2). In
addition, the terms of the files subject to the Sun RPC license will be changed
to the 3-part BSD license.
Please see https://www.openafs.org/relicense/relicensing-openafs.html for more
background and details.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Todd DeSantis (IBM) for his
pivotal work in the relicensing the OpenAFS 1.0 code base by IBM. Getting the
initial 1.0 release dual-licensed under IPL/GPLv2 was a major milestone, and
this entire relicensing effort would not be possible without his dedication.
Our next step is to update the licensing terms for contributions made since the
initial release.
If you have submitted changes to OpenAFS in the past and consent to
changing the license of your contributions as described in the webpage
linked above, you can record your consent in any of the following ways:
1. Submit a patch updating `RELICENSE.md` to gerrit.openafs.org
2. Send a reply to the openafs-devel@openafs.org or openafs-info@openafs.org
mailing lists stating your consent.
3. If you prefer not to reply publicly, you can send an email directly to
the current OpenAFS maintainers: Ben Kaduk <kaduk@mit.edu>, Andrew Deason
<adeason@sinenomine.net>, and/or Michael Meffie <mmeffie@sinenomine.net>
If your contributions were made as work-for-hire or on behalf of an employer,
please ensure you have the necessary authorization from your organization
before submitting consent, or let us know who to contact for consent.
We are also contacting contributors directly, but we greatly appreciate
anyone proactively sending a statement of consent; this helps move the
process forward more quickly.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and contributed to OpenAFS over the
years.
On behalf of the OpenAFS maintainers,
Michael Meffie
