Windows 7 has what are called troubleshooting packs. They basically
use Powershell along with a list of root causes. For each root cause,
you provide a script to see if the cause is present, provide a script
to fix issue, and provide a script to verify the issue is gone. I
created a very simple preliminary one for troubleshooting OpenAFS on
Windows. It currently only has one root cause it diagnoses,
specifically whether the service is running. However, on my machine,
it does correctly detect and resolve that issue.
As far as I can tell, I can't generally distribute it since it looks
like the troubleshooting packs need to be codesigned. If there's
interest, I can make the source of it available to Jeff, and he could
possibly create a codesigned version for distribution. There's
probably other common issues worthy of the pack detecting and
resolving so let me know if there's any ideas and interest in this.
