and then...

putting the two together I think I see the problem.
Check the command again and I think you will find that
mount_afs user.jwelch /Volumes/jwelch/
was the command actually typed.
This will result in the mount point named "/"
while
mount_afs user.jwelch /Volumes/jwelch
will result in the mount point named "jwelch".
We have actually been working on a version of mount_afs which will take
a flag to create the mount point if it does not exist and if you have privs.
