-v is not recognized by 10.'s mdutil, but:

***
$ sudo mdutil -i off /afs
/afs:
         Indexing disabled for volume.
***

However:

***
$ sudo cat /.Spotlight-V100/_exclusions.plist
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://
www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
         <key>EXCLUSIONS</key>
         <array>
                 <string>/private/tmp</string>
                 <string>/Users/fpc</string>
                 <string>/Users/jonas/darwin</string>
                 <string>/Users/jonas/fpcinst</string>
                 <string>/Users/jonas/fpcinst2</string>
                 <string>/Users/jonas/fpcinst-i386</string>
                 <string>/Users/jonas/gnu</string>
                 <string>/Developer</string>
                 <string>/Users/jonas/openafs</string>
                 <string>/Users/jonas/elisnobackup</string>
         </array>
</dict>
</plist>
***

It doesn't seem to add it to the exclusions list.
