I have a program "fsping" from Jeff Hutzelman which I use to test for
up-ness since what you really want is the fileserver to be up and
servicing requests.

Perhaps in the 1.1 releases; I'm trying to get 1.0.4 out the door now, and
the client should be much happier on Linux systems.
