[OpenAFS-devel] How can i konw whether to have an append dump?

I must determine if a tape is empty,which means it have no data or had been
erased completely.So i can execute first dump or append dump. But when i
used command "mt -f /dev/st0 status" i gained same results no matter the
tape is empty or not. And the result of command "fms" is strange. How can i
do ?
