This implies a network problem.

- Is the network up and configured by the time you start AFS?

- Are you running any "personal firewall" software (e.g. ipchains,
  ipfilter, etc) on your Mac that might be blocking the AFS ports
  (7000-7009)?

I suspect that the problem is that either the Mac cannot send packets
out to your server, or the server cannot respond.  This is clearly a
"I can't see you" problem with RX.
