Yes, it is. DNS, SSH, NTP, ping, etc. all go through without a hitch.

No. ipchains functionality is enabled in the stock kernel but there
are no user-defined rules and all chains default to ACCEPT.

The packets never even get as far as the Mac's eth0. tcpdump on the
Mac does not see them, and snoop on the AFS servers certainly doesn't.
