I bet the aix 5.1 param.h still works.

The deadlock fix is probably best commented on by kolya if he's
around/unbusy enough. Otherwise I'll figure out lock ordering; I think it
looks plausible but if so that's unfortunate because it probably means we
have some lock contention.
