(And you need a leading character to insure it's not treated as a volume
id, iirc)

It might be posssible to make it so "short" volume names continue to be
treated by name, so "fs lq ~" still shows user.shadow and not
x0000000000000001 or whatever, but you need to be careful to still hash
any volume whose name might legitimately be in this portion of namespace.
