No, you answered my questions.
Just for kicks -- have you tried rebooting your machine?
I admit that I did not try this build with kernel 2.4.20-28.9 so I
did not verify it directly. However I see nothing that would cause
this behavior unless udp/7001 is already bound by another application
so that the kernel couldn't grab it when trying to start AFS.
