I've had both of the problems you describe.

Here's the thing, though.  Are you going to fix the shared library
brokenness on all the other platforms?  So far, it's not looking very
good; libafsauthent and libafsrpc are not usefully versioned on any ELF
platform other than Solaris and apparently have been that way for a
while....
