In early October Derrick wrote to this list seeking qualified volunteers
to take on responsibility for the stable branch release processes. I am
happy to announce that Paul Smeddle and Stephan Wiesand have volunteered
to assist the OpenAFS community in their new role as 1.6 Branch Release
Managers.

As the release managers for the 1.6 branch, Stephan and Paul will assist
the Gatekeepers and the OpenAFS Development Community manage a more
regular release cycle starting with the 1.6.2 release.

The responsibilities of the Release Managers include:

 * Scheduling and moderating release-team@openafs.org meetings.
     https://lists.openafs.org/mailman/listinfo/release-team
     XMPP: release-team@conference.openafs.org

 * Managing pullups to the openafs-stable-1_6_x branch. Release
managers will prod developers to submit relevant changes to
Gerrit and can submit them to repository after the patchsets
have verified and community consensus has been reached.

 * Determining when pre-releases and final releases are ready
   for tagging.

 * Working with the release-team members to generate binary
packages for popular platforms prior to release announcement.

 * Collecting test reports from the community for each release.

Let us all thank Stephan and Paul ahead of time for their future
efforts. It is up to the community to make them a success by providing
continuous feedback on which patches contributed to the 'master' branch
should or should not be incorporated into a future 1.6.x release. And
most of, by testing the openafs-stable-1_6_x HEAD on a regular basis to
ensure that it continues to behave as desired.
