In addition to that, the OS buffer cache seems to be clever as well.
At least it was more clever than I was ;-) 

But the buffer cache seems to have different effects when using tar or
voldump (in all my latest test cases, the RAM of my test server is
bigger than all volume data currently on it). I continue to
investigate what's actually going on...
