[OpenAFS] scariest thing I ever saw...

Here we go...
The clients are Intel based machines running RedHat 6.1 (Cartman), kernel
2.2.18 and OpenAFS 1.0.4.
The servers are IBM RS/6000 running Transarc AFS 3.6.
When a user starts a package called CMT (something built on top of CVS as I
was told) and kicks off
some compilations, afs dies and /afs is overwritten, each time in a
different way. It ends up being
owned by the user and showing as a symlink to whatever (in one case it ended
up as a symlink to g++).
In other cases, /afs dissapears entirely:
[root@acas010 /root]# ls -ld /afs
ls: /afs: No such file or directory
I am baffled and am wondering if this could be a case of hacked code or what
the heck is going on ?
Any help will be, needless to say, immensely appreciated.
