[OpenAFS] SMP builds on linux 2.2.14-5

I downloaded and compiled openafs-1.0.tar.gz on a 2.2.14-5.0smp kernel
dual-cpu box, but when I try to run /etc/c.d/int.d/afs start I get an error
message saying that libafs-2.2.14-5.0smp.mp.o can't be found.
I'm not sure how to get this file compiled. I found a few references to it
on websites, but always on FTP servers that don't allow anonymous access,
and no mention of how to compile it.
I modified the afs script to use libafs-2.2.14.mp.o, but I don't think this
will work.
I've been trying to get things to work this way, but I keep getting errors
in my log files:
AuthLog:
/usr/afs/bin/kaserver: problems with host name Ubik init failed
ll database.
Fri Mar 2 01:59:10 2001 Using level crypt for Ubik connections.
Fri Mar 2 01:59:10 2001 ubik: primary address 127.0.0.1 does not exist
PtLog:
ptserver: problems with host name Ubik init failed
.0.1 does not exist
ptserver: running unauthenticated
ptserver: can't find any Kerberos keys, code = 70354689, ignoring
(the truncation to just ".o.1" makes me very nervous....)
VLLog:
Fri Mar 2 01:59:10 2001 ubik: primary address 127.0.0.1 does not exist
vlserver: Ubik init failed with code 5385
Could this be a symptom of why it isn't working? I can ping the box itself
at 127.0.0.1, I can ping the machine name I assigned to afs and it comes
back as 127.0.0.1, and I can also ping the FQDN of the server and I get
127.0.0.1 back.
I'm at my wit's end, and on a deadline with my CEO leaning over my shoulder.
Any assistance would be *greatly* appreciated.
thanks,
