Hm.... how did I got the 73 in name_to_sysnum?  Ah, I see.  in 5.7 it was
73 and in 5.8 it is 65.

right now I have successfully loaded the module with 40 (first free num)
so the problem was most probably due to the old number and not due to
the size of the module.
