Hi Amy,

there is an acceptable workaround for that problem (AFS 1.2.2 seg fault on
i386 or on i586 with i386 kernel). It is enough to build a 2.4.9-7 kernel
RPM starting with a stock 2.4.9-7 SRPM (just enable the 586 build for a
single processor machine in a spec file):

          %ifarch i586
          %define buildup 1

If a 586 machine is installed with this kernel, everything just works
fine (AFS has to be rebuilt, obviously). If you wish to try it, a working
combination of kernel and AFS RPMS may be found at:

           ftp://ftp.caspur.it/pub/afs or under
           /afs/caspur.it/project/openafs

[Credits go to Jaroslaw.Polok@cern.ch who suggested us this solution].

Andrei.
