Hi,

we had the same problem when switching our afs-clients to version 1.2.2
on our debian woody workstations.
Unfortunately the debian packages do not contain the any pam-modules as
it is recommended to use kerberos for authentication.
But there is of course a work around:

You can install the debian source package of openafs. Unpack the sources
and then make some modifications to the debian/rules file:

In the rule for the libopenafs package there exists a line which removes
all pam-modules. We changed that to copy the modules to /lib/security.

No you just build your own packages with 
dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot
in the main source directory.

You then have to install libopenafs in addition to the other packages
you want.
