I do not believe that AFS will retry.  I think you have to unlock and
re-release yourself.

I do not believe so.  I think you have to unlock manually.

AFS was not designed for a _widely_ distributed Cell (where widely
distributed means thin pipes between the servers).  It was meant for
one site of an Enterprise network, not a Wide Area Network.
