On linux: rmmod libafs
Basically, make sure the AFS kernel module has been removed. You can
verify that it's been removed by running "lsmod" and making sure that
libafs isn't in the list.
Another way of doing this is to reboot the machine and bring it up in
single-user mode.

Yes, you will need to "mkdir /afs" before you start the AFS client.
AFS will not automatically create the /afs directory for you.
