[OpenAFS] upclientbin for different architectures?

Hi,

how does afs handle the upclientbin-system when you have different 
architectures and so different binaries?

For example we want to have afs on itanium central and on linux i386 
decentral.
I suppose that the binaries for Itanium don't work on i386, so the 
upclientbin-mechanism is not usefull in this case?
Or does anyone has another solution for heterogenous enviroments?
