Thanks very much for your reply. This could be the problem, but I'm not
sure. I found afsd in /usr/vice/etc and I found a copy under the 1.2.9
source tree in src/afsd/afsd so renamed /usr/vice/etc/afsd tp afsd.old and
copied src/afsd/afsd to /usr/vice/etc. Not when I type /etc/rc.d/init.d/afs
start I get this, but at least it no longer hangs.
Found libafs-2.4.20-13.7.o from SymTable... Loading...
Starting AFS services.....
afsd: some file missing or bad in /usr/local/etc/openafs
There is no file or directory /usr/local/etc/openafs, and creating it as a
directory doesn't help. I'm not sure what else I have to do to make sure
all parts of 1.2.9 have been updated where they need to be. Any help or
pointers to relevant documentation would be greatly appreciated . Thanks.

Actually, to be more clear, you need to make sure that you're running
both libafs AND afsd from 1.2.9 -- you cannot mix and match across
versions.
So, I'll ask again, did you download and upgrade to 1.2.9 and then
build the 1.2.9 kernel module?
