Thanks for the replies on this.  It appears to be a combination of a bad rh9 
glibc (2.3.2-27.9.6 appears to have had some bad threading code in it, and has 
been replaced by 2.3.2-27.9.7) and an unrelated problem with some old ide 
drivers on other systems.

I'll go back to lurking now...
