AFAIK, there is no explicit server-side caching. (The OS should take
care of that, e.g. by using usused memory as file system cache.)

You mean a distributed cache like Squid's? This is also not possible
and it would be pretty complicated in regard to how cache invalidation
works with AFS - the file server tells all clients if a file's content
have changed.
