Well the fileserver doesn't really crash, afs just loses contact with it when the copy hits 750Mb -- the size of the cache specified in cacheinfo. There is nothing in the logs.  I then have to issue something like 'fs checkservers' in order to reestablish connectivity.  I have plenty of space.

This is the weird part: I set up this server a couple of weeks ago so people can run Bonnie, etc., and "performance test" it.  A bunch of large files are sitting around.  Then I needed to recompile openafs with TSM support.  I notice now that all the large test files have had their magic number changed, so depending on where you're looking from they are "unix-rt" or "ultrix-11".  These are the files I realize can't be copied within afsland.  However, I just generated 10Gb files on the new setup and copied them around without difficulty.

If anyone know why, please tell me.  Otherwise I'm just going to move on...
