There are a couple reasons.  The main one is that I don't want to maintain
my own installer.  I may have to in order to change the defaults, but I really
don't want to do anything beyond that if I can help it.  The other reason is
that there are so many developer machines set up in so many different ways
that I would just as soon not tackle automated placement of a 500 MB cache file.
