rebuild your kernel with the magic sysrq option.  when the machine
gets in this mode, press alt-sysrq-T (see Documentation/sysrq.txt
for more information about this).   this should let you know where 
the processes are stuck spinning.

you could also use fstrace.  do 'fstrace setset' after starting afs
and before you run into problems.  when afs gets sick, run 'fstrace dump'
