RESPONSIBILITIES

The University of Maryland is seeking an energetic, team oriented
employee who will contribute to the design, implementation, and
management of a distributed, Unix-based, multi-user, multi-vendor
computing environment consisting of well over 1,000 servers and desktop
computers. The incumbent will be responsible for the installation and
maintenance of Solaris, Tru64, AIX, and Linux operating systems as well
as the hardware, software, and network components and services that
comprise the overall computing environment. The incumbent will also,
monitor system performance, investigate problems, interact with vendors,
and consult with campus clients on hardware and software needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

To be eligible, applicants must hold a Baccalaureate in Computer Science
or a related field, have at least five years full-time experience in
Unix/Linux operating system programming and system administration, and
have a minimum of three years experience managing a Kerberos realm and
an AFS cell. The incumbent must also demonstrate all of the following
knowledge, skills and abilities:

- facility with Unix-hosted network applications including DNS, DHCP,
  email, web servers, Kerberos authentication, etc.

- familiarity with Unix/Linux operating system internals, client/server
  computing techniques, distributed systems management mechanisms, and all
  aspects of computer communications

- fluency in Unix programming languages (C, C++, Perl, shell scripts,
  etc.)

The ability to work with customers, both individually and in groups, is
essential. Excellent written and oral skills are also required, and the
incumbent must be able to work effectively in a team environment, must
work well with internal and external customers, and must be a flexible,
highly motivated self-starter. The position has a 24x7 support
requirement, so the incumbent must also be willing, able, and available
to participate in a regular on-call rotation, work a flexible schedule,
and respond to out-of-band emergencies when the need arises.
