How do I load balance a single volume that has a single dir of
~1,000,000 files that are all accessed heavily for read/write?

I have thought about this, (I am still in the research stages) and
having multiple volumes mapped to different parts of the path tree, but
one thing still eludes me as to how I should deal with the above
problem.
