At a certain point, you're straying from the list topic.

Russ Allbery said it with "I would use something other than AFS for an
application with those particular characteristics."

Off the top of my head, RAID and DBMSs are the main mechanisms for getting
redundancy with heavy r/w activity.

Courier-imap works great with RAID.
