So /afs/YYY.EDU/users/X/Y/Z are accessible, and your home XYZABC  
resides in Z (as a separate volume, I presume).

That would have been my second question: can you please post the  
relevant output of ls -l for your home? I mean, do you have the UNIX  
permissions to access that directory?
