I did not spend any time on this and I don't have AFS running on
my Pre any more so I can't easily try.

"/" on the Pre is ext3(*) but I think I didn't realize back then that "/"
is mounted read-only (duh!). I immediately switched to memcache.

(*) There are three file system types on the Pre:
- the system directories are all ext3 mounted "ro"
- the volatile system directories ("/tmp" and the like) are all tmpfs
- the large user data (songs, pictures, etc.) are all on the flash memory
chip mounted as vfat.
