Definitely not a feature IMHO. To help us think more about it:

Distro?
Kernel version?
File system type of your cache?
Is the cache its own partition?
Is the problem repeatable? (I guess yes)
Does the problem go away with memcache?

PS: Feels like something is garbage collecting inodes a bit too
agressively.
