udebug talks to ubik servers. those are on ports 7002 and 7003 (and
7004 if you have the kaserver).

you udebug'd port 7001. nothing happened. it's also completely
irrelevant to any problem you might have.

look at the server logs on the db servers.
or
udebug the correct ports (you'll want 7003 for the vl service)
or
well, what does the client tell you? no /afs/help.man.ac.uk (or, if no
-dynroot on clients, no /afs)?
what's in the client's log? a server down message? for which server?
