Do you mean "disktool -r" instead of "diskutil -r"? The help for
disktool, under -r, says:
Refresh Disk Arbitration. Causes arbitration to refresh its internal
tables and look for new mounts/unmounts.
but diskutil doesn't mention any switch options.
