... yes, Derrick; it looked like it started to read the image, but 
I'll do some more work on this to see if I can categorize the failure 
mode more precisely.

... Finder first, then any subsequent application wedged when it came 
to do file i/o.  The Window Manager was the only manipulatable item; 
I could move windows around on the screen (though I could not change 
focus / frontmost window).
