well, your question is ambiguous.  inasmuch as it's not
really _necessary_, it's just that it's been done
once already (AFS-4, aka DCE/DFS) and, well, basically
i thought it'd be cool to see it done again, is the
bottom line.  and that will take effort.

now, assuming that, to save effort in the _job_ of
adding DCE/RPC to AFS, i described yesterday in one
of my messages what procedure i thought best to
follow / investigate.

... but i'm not sure that's the question you were asking:
if you're asking will doing this work now save effort with
respect to understanding and possibly merging AFS-4 (DCE/DFS)
when/if it becomes an Open Source Project, then the answer
is definitely yes because the people who actually do the
development will by then have a working knowledge of
both AFS and dce/rpc, and the differences between AFS-4
from The Open Group and AFS-3 from OpenAFS will stick out
much clearer.
